Objective: Epilepsy is the common relative disorder that involved almost one percent of people in the world. Investigation of thyroid function in epileptic patients can provide a better understanding of the pathophysiology of epilepsy. Also if found thyroid function disorder in this patients, possible helps to process of treatment.
Methods & Materials: In 60 epileptic adult patients data include: Demographic data, type of seizure, time of seizure onset, EEG recorded in the patients check lists. Also T3, T4, TSH serum level was measured and recorded in the check list.
Results: Among 60 patients with mean of age 39 that were include 34 male (57.6 percent) and 26 female (43.3 percent), the blood level of TSH was increased in 3 patients and decreased in 2 patients, the blood level of T4 was increased in 3 patients and decreased in1 patient and the blood level of T3 was increased in 3 patients and decreased in 2 patients. The mean of T3, T4 and TSH have been obtained 120.6, 7.8 and 3.1 respectively. Among female patients, T4 in 3 patients had been increased and 1 patient had been decreased but among male patients, the all of them had been normal T4 that show in sex variable there is significant difference level of T4.
Conclusion: Female patients with epilepsy had a higher risk of changes T4. Thyroid function in these patients should be monitored closely.
