Introduction: People with obsessive-compulsive disorder face various psychological and cognitive impairments. Accordingly the present study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of group psychotherapy with dynamic-communication approach on suppression of thoughts in people with obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Method: The current study was a semi-experimental application with a pre-test-post-test design with a control group and a two-month follow-up period. The statistical population of the study was composed of people suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder who referred to counseling and psychotherapy centers in Isfahan during the second 6 months of 2023. In this research, 36 people with obsessive-compulsive disorder were selected by purposeful sampling and randomly assigned to experimental and control groups (18 people in the experimental group and 18 people in the control group). The people in the experimental group received the group psychotherapy with dynamic-communication approach during eight weeks in sixteen 90-minute sessions. Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Questionnaire (YBOCQ), and Suppression of Thoughts Questionnaire (STQ) were used in the present study. The data were analyzed through mixed ANOVA via SPSS23 software.
Results: The results showed that group psychotherapy with dynamic-communication approach has significant effect on the suppression of thoughts and microscales of distraction, worry, re-evaluation of thoughts, punishment and social control in people with obsessive-compulsive disorder (p<0.0001).
Conclusion: Based on the findings of the research, Group psychotherapy with a dynamic-communicative approach by focusing precisely and completely on the patient's emotions, using empathic statements, reflecting the patient's words, focusing on the experience full of emotion, exploring internal physical symptoms, redefining oneself and accepting the experience can be as an efficient method to reduce the suppression of thoughts in people with obsessive-compulsive disorder
