Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy on stress coping styles and depression in patients with MS in Tehran.
The research method is semi-experimental and pre-post-test design with control group was used for data collection. The statistical population of the study consisted of 17,000 MS patients in Tehran city, among whom 30 were selected by convenience sampling method and were randomly assigned to experimental (n = 15) and control (n = 15) groups. The mindfulness-based cognitive therapy experiment group was trained for 8 sessions of 90 minutes and the control group remained on the waiting list. The tools used in the present study included Lazarus and Folkman's (1984) and Beck's Depression Inventory (1961) coping styles that were used in both pre-test and post-test. Data analysis was done by SPSS software in two descriptive and inferential parts (covariance analysis).
The findings showed that mindfulness-based cognitive therapy increased problem-focused coping style and decreased emotion-focused coping style in patients with MS. The results also showed that mindfulness-based cognitive therapy reduced depression in patients with MS.
Thus, it seems that mindfulness-based cognitive therapy can reduce depression and provide effective techniques for coping with stress and negative emotions in patients with MS.
