Comparison of the Effect of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy and Narrative Therapy in Improving Death Related Distress and Psychological Hardiness in Female Patients with Breast Cancer

Introduction: Cancer can cause many psychological problems for patients and it is essential to find effective ways to help them. Therefore this study was done aimed to compare effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and Narrative Therapy (NT) in improving death related distress and psychological hardiness in female patients with breast cancer.
Materials and Methods: Design of this study was semi-experimental type as pretest-posttest with two experiment groups and one control group.Statistical population consisted of all women with breast cancer who referred to hospitals in Tehran in 2019.The sample studied were all 45 patients who were selected through purposive sampling method and were divided into three groups- under training with CBT and NT groups and one control group.For collection data was used from Death Anxiety Scale (DAS), Death Depression Scale (DDS) and Personal Views Survey Questionnaire (PVSQ.) Data analyzing was conducted with MANCOVA and Bonferroni post-hoc test and SPSS-22.
Results: The results showed that there was a significant difference between the CBT and NT with the control group in post-test of death anxiety (F= 15.4443, p < 0.05) death depression (F = 21.79, p <0.05) and psychological hardiness (F= 4.63, p < 0.05). Also, the results showed that there was a significant difference between CBT and NT in death anxiety and depression (p < 0.05) and NT was more effective; but there was no significant difference in psychological hardiness between them (p>0.05).
Conclusion: According to the findings this study, CBT and NT can be used as an effective way to improve the death related distress and psychological hardiness in patients with breast cancer and in this context, NT can be more effective.
