Abstract

Introduction and purpose: Breast cancer can lead to psychological and emotional damages besides chronic physiologic damages. Therefore, the present study was conducted to predict psychological wellbeing according to negative automatic thoughts and inefficient attitudes in the patients with breast cancer.
Material and method: The research method was descriptive in correlational type. The statistical population included all 1350 women with breast cancer who were under treatment at therapy centers and specialized hospitals in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer in the city of Tehran in the summer of 2020. The statistical sample included 300 women who were selected through available sampling method. The applied questionnaires included negative automatic thoughts questionnaire (Kendal and Holon, 1980), inefficient attitudes questionnaire (Wiseman and Beck, 1978) and psychological wellbeing questionnaire (Ryff, 1989). The data analysis was conducted via Pearson correlation and multiple regression methods after collecting the questionnaires.
Findings: The results showed that there is a significant relationship between psychological wellbeing, negative automatic thoughts and inefficient attitudes in the patients with breast cancer (p<0.001). Moreover, negative automatic thoughts and inefficient attitudes significantly predicted psychological wellbeing of the patients with breast cancer.
Conclusion: Taking the significant role of negative automatic thoughts and inefficient attitudes in predicting psychological wellbeing, it is necessary to sufficiently attend to the negative automatic thoughts and inefficient attitudes of the patients with breast cancer in order to improve their psychological wellbeing.
