Abstract
Introduction: Depressed patients often face challenges related to life expectancy and psychological well-being. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effectiveness of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) on depression and suicidal thoughts in patients with major depressive disorder.
Methods: This semi-experimental study employed a pretest-posttest design with a control group. The study population included outpatient depressed patients who visited psychological service centers and clinics in Tehran during the spring of 2023. A total of 30 participants were selected through purposive sampling and randomly assigned to two equal groups. The experimental group underwent 10 sessions of 90-minute ACT treatment, while the control group received no training. The research tools included depression and suicidal thought scales. Data were analyzed using Chi-square tests, multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA), and Bonferroni post hoc tests.
Results: The findings showed no significant difference between the groups in terms of gender, age, and educational level (P > 0.05). Furthermore, the ACT treatment method significantly improved outcomes compared to the control group (P < 0.001)
Conclusion: Based on the results, therapists and health professionals can use ACT to improve health-related attributes, particularly by reducing depression and suicidal thoughts.
