Abstract

Introduction: Spiritual health, low self-esteem, and depression are among the most common negative psychological conditions in the elderly with type 2 diabetes, which can cause many complications. The purpose of the present study was to determine the effectiveness of treatment based on acceptance and commitment on spiritual health, self-esteem and depression of the elderly with type 2 diabetes.
Methodology: The current research was a semi-experimental type of pre-test-post-test-follow-up study with a control group. The current research population included elderly women and men suffering from type 2 diabetes in Tehran city, who visited the health and treatment centers in East Tehran in 1400 and were suffering from type 2 diabetes. Among these, 30 people were selected by purposeful sampling and then randomly assigned to two groups of 15 people. Acceptance and commitment therapy was implemented during 8 sessions on the elderly with type 2 diabetes, but the control group did not receive any intervention. The data were collected through the elderly depression scale (Yesvij et al., 1982), the spiritual health questionnaire (Palotzin and Ellison, 1983) and the self-esteem questionnaire (Rosenberg, 1979) and using the mixed analysis of variance test and SPSS26 software were analyzed.
Results: The findings showed that treatment based on acceptance and commitment is effective on the spiritual health, self-esteem, and depression of the elderly (P<0.05).
Conclusion: Considering the effectiveness of acceptance and commitment therapy, it is suggested that this therapeutic intervention be used to improve the spiritual health, self-esteem, and depression of the elderly with type 2 diabetes.
