Abstract

Background: Anger and aggression are among the most common problems of children and teenagers that can lead to injury or harm to themselves or others. Considering the role of the mother in the family and raising children, we decided to investigate the prevalence of psychiatric disorders in aggressive children and their mothers.
Method: 68 aggressive children and their mothers participated in this descriptive study. The method of data collection was based on a checklist made by the researcher, a questionnaire to assess the mental health of children and adolescents, and an interview with mothers. Information such as gender, age, education level, employment status, and substance abuse Collected by checklist. SPSS version 25 software was used for statistical data analysis. P<0.05 was considered as significance level.
Findings: The average age of the studied children was 10.48 ± 2.46 years. 50% of the children were male and 50% were female. The highest prevalence of psychiatric disorder in aggressive children was attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (22.1%) followed by anxiety (17.6%). The prevalence of conduct disorder and oppositional defiant disorder were 10.3% and 7.4%, respectively. The prevalence of psychosis, depression and substance abuse in mothers was 13.2%, 36.8%, and 23.5%, respectively.
Conclusion: The difference in the prevalence of psychiatric disorder in children was significant according to the gender of the child, so that ADHD and ODD were more common in boys and conduct disorder in girls (pvalue=0.01).
