Investigation of vision disorders, eye treatments and vision outcomes in cases of methanol poisoning hospitalized in Imam Reza (AS) Mashhad Hospital in 2018

Abstract

Objective: Methanol poisoning is a major problem in Iran. One of the most important complications is vision complications. The purpose of this study is to investigate the types of vision disorders and consequences of this poisoning.
Research method: This study was conducted in a retrospective cross-sectional manner. All records of patients with methanol poisoning in one year were reviewed. Patients with other narcotic or psychoactive drugs, chronic kidney disease and diabetes were excluded from the study. The data was analyzed by SPSS software and the results were discussed.

Results: A total of 26 patients with a mean age of 32.76 ± 9.25 years and a range of 15 to 52 years were included , of which 22 (84.62%) were male and the rest were female. 20 patients (76.92%) had GCS equal to 15 at the time of referral, but GSC was equal to 3 in 3 patients (15.38%). The average serum levels of methanol and ethanol in the patients were 11.70±14.46 mg/dL and 25.07±42.72 mg/dL, respectively. The source of alcohol consumption was unknown in 11 patients (43.31%) and in 15 patients (57.69%). In the discussion of visual complications, disc paleness was found in 13 , NFL edema in 11 , NFL ischemia in 4 , retinal hemorrhage in 4 and positive RAPD in 4 patients. Regarding the fate of the patients, 3 patients (11.54%) died.
Conclusion: Various findings are found in the visual examination of methanol poisoning patients that the most common finding was the pallor of optic disc.
