Introduction: Nowadays, to reduce various social harms in adolescents, emphasis is placed on school-based empowerment programs all over the world. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of an empowerment intervention program on self-control skills and prevention of substance use in adolescents. Materials and Methods: The present research method was a quasi-experimental type that was conducted with a pretest-post test design and a control group. The statistical population of the research consisted of all tenth-grade students in Mallard city, of whom 380 (190 boys and 190 girls) were selected as a statistical sample using a multi-stage cluster sampling method. The experimental group underwent 11 sessions of psychosocial empowerment training, and the control group underwent conventional school training. Research data were collected using drug attitude questionnaires and self-control questionnaires. Data analysis was performed using analysis of covariance. Results: The research findings showed that training in the psychosocial empowerment program was significantly effective in reducing the rate of drug use (f=20.94, p<0.01), improving attitudes towards drug use (f=22.017, p<0.01), and improving self-control skills (f=271.426, p<0.01).
Conclusion: As a result, teaching a psychosocial empowerment program can be used as an effective strategy to reduce drug use rates, improve attitudes toward drug use, and improve self-control skills in students.
