Abstract
Introduction: It has been reported that leptin can stimulate irisin secretion by modulating muscle metabolism. The aim of the present study was to determine the simultaneous effect of aerobic exercise combined with Spirulina supplementation on irisin and leptin in overweight elderly men. Materials and methods: In this double-blind clinical trial, 32 obese adult men were selected and randomly divided into 4 groups: overweight (Obe), overweight-exercise (ObeAT), overweight-Spirulina (ObeSP), and overweight-exercise-Spirulina (ObeATSP). The exercise groups performed five training sessions per week for eight weeks, including walking on a treadmill, stationary cycling, and stair climbing at an intensity of 65% of maximum heart rate, which gradually increased to 70-85%. Two 500 mg tablets were taken daily in the morning and evening by the subjects in the supplement group. Results: A significant increase in IRISIN and a decrease in LEPTIN levels were observed in the ObeAT (P=0.017 and P=0.008, respectively), ObeSP (P=0.009 and P=0.044, respectively) and ObeATSP (P=0.0001 and P=0.008, respectively) groups compared to the Obe group. IRISIN levels were significantly increased in the ObeAT (P=0.041), ObeSP (P=0.043) and ObeATSP (P=0.0001) groups compared to the C group; and the ObeATSP group compared to the ObeAT (P=0.030) and ObeSP (P=0.029) groups. Conclusion: According to the results, the use of aerobic exercise and Spirulina supplementation is recommended as an effective non-pharmacological strategy to improve the metabolic health of overweight elderly people under the supervision of a specialist.
