Causal Model of Academic Burnout based on emotional-social competence and Academic Support through Mediation of Academic Self-Handicapping in the Process of Virtual Instruction during Lockdown Era caused by COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract

Introduction: The aim of the present research was the study of the relation between Academic Burnout and two other variables including emotional-social competence and Academic Support through mediative role of Academic Self-Handicapping in the process of virtual instruction during Lockdown era caused by COVID-19 pandemic.
Materials and Methods: For this purpose, 343 people were selected as the sample of the statistical society including female students educating in the secondary high schools of Tehran in 1399-1400 academic year. Clustered Multi-stage manner was sampling method. The measurement means included Maslach Burnout Inventory, Academic Self-Handicapping Scale, Sands & Plunkett Academic Support and social emotional competence questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed by using SEM in order to determine the fitness of the model and Bootstrap method.
Results: The direct standard effect sizes of emotional-social competence (β= -.097, p> .05) and Academic Support (β= -.017, p> .05) on Academic Burnout were not significant, but the indirect standard effect sizes of emotional-social competence (β=-.028, p<.05) and Academic Support (β=-.056, p<.05) on Academic Burnout through mediative role of Academic Self-Handicapping were significant. As well as, the total effect sizes of emotional-social competence (β=-.126, p>.05) and Academic Support (β=-.073, p>.05)on Academic Burnout were not significant.
Conclusion: The results of the research supported the examined model and that it was an appropriate model in order to explain Academic Burnout in female teenagers. The findings of the research can be used by counselors and educational psychologists.
