Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between social anxiety, early maladaptive schemas, and childhood traumatic experiences, with the mediating role of cognitive emotion regulation among university students. Methodology: This research is applied in terms of its goal, quantitative in terms of data, and descriptive-correlational of structural equation modeling in nature. The statistical population consisted of all students of the Islamic Azad University of Lahijan in the academic year 2023-2024, totaling 8,000 individuals. A cluster random sampling method was used to select participants. Using the Cochran formula, the sample size was determined to be 367 individuals. Data were collected using the Social Anxiety Inventory, Early Maladaptive Schemas Questionnaire, Garnfsky et al.'s (2001) Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ), and the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ). The data were analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficient, structural equation modeling, and SPSS 22 and Smart PLS version 3 software. Findings: The results of Pearson correlation analysis indicated a significant relationship between social anxiety disorder, early maladaptive schemas, and childhood traumatic experiences among students (P < 0.001). Additionally, the results of structural equation modeling demonstrated that cognitive emotion regulation mediates the relationship between early maladaptive schemas and social anxiety disorder among students (P < 0.001). Cognitive emotion regulation also mediates the relationship between childhood traumatic experiences and social anxiety disorder among students (P < 0.001).
