Comparison of the Effectiveness of Anger Management and Parenting Training on Self-compassion in Students with Oppositional Defiant Disorder

Abstract

Background and Purpose:. The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of anger management and parenting training on response inhibition, self-pity and selective attention in students with Oppositional Defiant Disorder.
Method: In terms of applied purpose, and in terms of the nature of the data, this study was a quasi-experimental design of pre-test and post-test design with a control group. The statistical population of the study was all fifth and sixth grade male students in District 9 of Tehran in the academic year of 2009-2010. 45 people were selected by convenience sampling method and randomly divided into two experimental groups and one control group. The experimental groups were trained and the control group remained on the waiting list. The instruments used were the confrontational disobedience disorder rating scale in children (Homersen et al., 2006) and self-pity (Nef, 2003), which were used in pre-test and post-test. Data were analyzed by one-way analysis of covariance in Spss software version 23.
Findings: The results showed that the group receiving the anger management and parenting training program on Self-compassion in students with Oppositional Defiant Disorder are not only showed more effectiveness than the control group. Self-compassion and selective attention of students with Oppositional Defiant Disorderare had the same effect as parenting department.
Conclusion: Therefore, the use of parenting and anger management training along with educational courses for students with confrontational disobedience disorder can prevent the occurrence, exacerbation and conversion of symptoms of confrontational disobedience disorder.
