Objective: Adhesion and the formation of fibrotic bands are among the most important complications following abdominal and pelvic surgeries. Major studies in the field of adhesion prevention have been conducted using antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents. Given the anti-inflammatory effects of statins and the role of inflammation in the formation of peritoneal adhesions, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of atorvastatin on the prevention of post-operative peritoneal adhesions in rats.
Methods: This study was conducted on 20 male rats. Under general anesthesia, a 2-3 cm midline abdominal incision was made. The cecum abrasion model was used to induce adhesions. Rats were randomly divided into four groups each consisting of 5 rats. They received 5 ml of 1% hydrocortisone acetate, 1% atorvastatin solution, 4% atorvastatin solution, and normal saline, respectively. All animals were sacrificed on the fifth postoperative day. Microscopic adhesions were scored on a scale of 1 to 4, and macroscopic adhesions were scored from 0 to 5. Blood samples were also taken for CRP analysis on the first and fifth days. Finally, the obtained data were analyzed using SPSS version 16.
