Abstract

Introduction : The prevalence of nosocomial infections in the intensive care unit (ICU) is 3 to 5 times higher than in others care units and its incidence in developing countries is 50%. This research aims to determine the financial burden of nosocomial pneumonia infection in The intensive care units were performed at the Shahid Hasheminejad educational and Medical center in Mashhad.
Materials and methods: The present study was conducted using a comparative descriptive on the records of hospitalized patients with hospital- acquired pneumonia and patients without infection in the intensive care units of the Shahid Hasheminezhad educational and Medical center in Mashhad during the years 2022 to 2024. The required data were extracted from the patient records and Hospital Information System (HIS) and entered into the Excel software to perform statistical analysis of the software. SPSS software version 25 was used.
Results: The total cost difference of 2024 compared to 2022 for patients with nosocomial pneumonia was equal to 375,614,818 Rials (an increase of 24/17%) and for patients without nosocomial pneumonia was equal to 266,092,999 Rials (an increase of 35/22%). Also, the average total cost in patients with nosocomial pneumonia in the studied departments was 817,065,161 Rials and in patients without nosocomial pneumonia was 373,997,808 Rials. that these differences were statistically significant(P<0.001).
Conclusion: The increase of more than 2 times the cost of patients with nosocomial pneumonia compared to without nosocomial pneumonia patients are very important both in terms of health system costs and in terms of microbial resistance.
