Background and Aim: Diabetes as a non-communicable disease is one of the most important challenges to human health in today's society. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of self-care-based health literacy training on reducing the symptoms of the disease in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Materials and Methods: The present study was a quasi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest design with a control group and a follow-up stage. The statistical population consisted of all people with type 2 diabetes referred to the Endocrine and Metabolism Research Center of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences in 1399. According to Cohen's table, 40 people were replaced as samples in the experimental and control groups. In order to collect information, FBS blood glucose test was performed on patients in two stages: pre-test-post-test and HBA1C test in the follow-up stage. The research was conducted for five weeks and the intervention of health literacy and self-care training in the experimental group was performed during 10 training sessions (2 sessions per week) with a time of 90 minutes. Statistical data were performed using one-way univariate analysis of covariance and mixed analysis of variance with repeated measurements and analyzed with Spss21 software.
Results: Health literacy and self-care training had a significant effect on hypoglycemia in the post-test phase in patients with type 2 diabetes (p <0.01). There was also evidence that the effect of health literacy and self-care education on the symptoms of type 2 diabetes is lasting over time (p <0.01).
