Introduction: Training capable nurses with in-depth knowledge in the field of pharmacology and safe drug administration is one of the important goals of the nursing education program. Inefficiency of the pharmacology education program in achieving the above goals will result in compromising patient safety. The present study was conducted with the aim of explaining the perception of nursing students regarding the efficiency of the pharmacology and drug therapy unit (theory and clinical).
Methods: The present study is a qualitative study with a conventional content analysis approach that was conducted with the participation of nursing students of Azad University, Lahijan Branch, with maximum diversity and purposeful sampling. Data were collected individually through semi-structured interviews and simultaneously analyzed based on the Granheim and Landman model. Lincoln and Guba criteria were used to ensure the accuracy and Trustworthiness of the data.
Results: Data Analysis revealed two main categories and five subcategories. The first main category, Ineffectiveness of the pharmacology and pharmacotherapy courses, included "curriculum deficiencies" and " training of incompetence nurses." The second main category, Recommendations for curriculum transformation, encompassed "curriculum revision," "institutionalization of medication error disclosure culture," and "promotion of inter-organizational collaboration.
Conclusion: The inefficiency of the pharmacology and pharmacotherapy curriculum in increasing drug knowledge and safe management of drug administration from the perspective of nursing students requires continuous evaluation and fundamental changes in the structure of the educational program and is a serious warning for decision-makers and policymakers in the field of nursing education and curriculum planning.
