Objective: This study investigated the relationship between traumatic childhood experiences and rumination with suicidal ideation through the mediating role of internalized shame.
Method: The present study is a descriptive-explanatory and correlational study using structural equations and is a cross-sectional study in terms of time. The statistical population of the present study includes all students of Lahijan Azad University, 9031 people. Finally, 210 people were selected as the final sample using the purposive convenience sampling method. In order to measure the variables under study, the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), the Standard Suicidal Ideation Scale, the Rumination Questionnaire by Hoeksma and Maro (1991), and the Internalized Shame Questionnaire by Cook (1993) were used.
Findings: The results showed that internalized shame plays a mediating role in the relationship between traumatic childhood experiences and suicidal thoughts (P<0.05). Also, internalized shame plays a mediating role in the relationship between rumination and suicidal thoughts (P<0.05).
Conclusion: Students who have traumatic childhood experiences are more strict with themselves due to internalized shame and have less capacity to face challenging issues, which leads to increased rumination and further decrease in psychological health and, as a result, increased suicidal thoughts.
