Background: Systematic reviews are at the top of the evidence pyramid and provide a strong basis for changes in medicine and patient management. The present study was conducted to check the compliance of systematic reviews published in selected journals of a type 1 University with the international guidelines of PRISMA.
Method: In this cross-section study, journals that had a scientific-research rank in Mashhad University of Medical Sciences in 2021 were included and based on three main indexing levels (ISI, Scopus, other indexes), at least two journals were randomly selected from each stratum. For each journal, the articles published between 2013 and 2020 were reviewed and all systematic reviews were extracted. The articles were evaluated by the PRISMA checklist (containing 27 items in seven domains, including title, abstract, introduction, methods, findings, discussion, and financial source).
Results: A total of 76 systematic reviews were examined. The average number of authors of these studies was 4.6 ± 2.2. The highest number of articles related to the International Journal of Gynecology and Obstetrics (13 items, 17.1%) and to journals indexed in Scopus (32 items, 42.1%). Among the items in the PRISMA checklist, objectives, reasonableness, information sources, search, study selection, summary of evidence, discussion, and conclusions were in full compliance with the PRISMA instructions in all the reviewed articles. The overall average compliance was 77.4 ± 11.5 percent.
