Introduction: The present study was conducted with the aim of predicting quality of life based on self-compassion, mindfulness, and disease perception in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Methods: This was a descriptive correlational study. The statistical population was all patients with type 2 diabetes referring to medical centers in the city of Tonekabon in 1404. 160 people were selected as a statistical sample using the available sampling method. The most widely used instruments were: the World Health Organization Quality of Life Questionnaire Short Form (1989), the Neff Self-Compassion Questionnaire (2003), the Freiburg Mindfulness Questionnaire Short Form (2006), and the Broadbent et al. Disease Perception Questionnaire (2006). The data obtained from the study were analyzed using multivariate regression analysis and Pearson correlation coefficient.
Results: The results showed that there is a positive and significant relationship between self-compassion and disease perception and the quality of life of patients with type 2 diabetes, but no significant relationship was observed between mindfulness and the quality of life of patients with type 2 diabetes. Stepwise regression was used to determine the predictive value of each variable. First, self-compassion was entered into the model as the strongest predictor and was able to explain 23.7% of the variance of the quality of life criterion variable. In the second step, illness perception was added to the model and these two variables, self-compassion and illness perception, were able to explain 35.9% of the variance of the quality of life criterion variable. Entering illness perception into the model was able to help explain 12.2% of the variance of the quality of life criterion variable. Conclusion: Based on the findings, it is possible to pay attention to psychological and individual variables in order to help improve the treatment process of diabetic patients and facilitate the treatment process by strengthening self-compassion and increasing the perception of the disease.
