Introduction: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is an important factor in the development of chronic liver disease and liver cell carcinoma. Lichen planus is an extrahepatic manifestation of hepatitis C virus infection, the aim of our study was to investigate the association between hepatitis C infection and Lichen planus disease.
Materials& Methods: This case-control study was performed on 106 patients referred to the dermatology clinic of 22 Bahman Hospital between 1396 and 1397. The patient group consisted of 53 patients with lichen planus and the control group consisted of 53 patients without lichen planus who had referred for cosmetic purposes. After obtaining informed consent, hepatitis C antivirus test was performed in both case and control groups. In positive cases, hepatitis C virus polymerase chain reaction (HCV.PCR) test was performed to confirm the infection. Patients' information was collected through a checklist and analyzed by SPSSv24 software.
Results: The study included 55 women (51.9%) and 51 men (48.1%). The mean age was 31.2 ± 7.8 years. In 53 patients with Lichen Plan, 1 person (1.9%) and in the control group, 3 patients (5.7%) were positive for hepatitis C virus. There was no significant difference between the two groups of cases and control in hepatitis C infection (P = 0.618).
Conclusion: It seems that there was no significant difference between the control group and the case; therefore, routine testing of hepatitis C antibodies is not necessary in all patients with lichen planus.
