Introduction: Cognitive computer games are a new and stimulating method for students that, in addition to being entertaining, can help them improve their cognitive functions, including processing speed, selective attention, and working memory, which are closely related to their academic success in school years. The aim of the present study was to determine the effectiveness of the Lumosity cognitive computer game on working memory and processing speed in elementary school female students
Methods: The present study was applied in terms of purpose and semi-experimental research with a control and target group in terms of method. The statistical population of the present study included all female students of Shahid Danesh Hojjati Elementary School in Rasht City. Of these, 34 female elementary school students were selected through convenience sampling and randomly assigned to two experimental (17 people) and control (17 people) groups. The letter-digit sorting test, Wechsler coding and symbol recognition test, and digit span test were administered to the subjects in the experimental and control groups before and after the research period. In order to analyze the data, descriptive statistical methods such as mean variance and standard deviation, as well as inferential statistical methods such as one-way analysis of variance, Levine's equality test, were used to determine the equality and similarity of the experimental and control groups, and covariance was used to examine the difference in pre-test-posttest scores and the differences between the groups.
Findings: The analysis of covariance in the variables of working memory and processing speed between the experimental and control groups showed a significant difference, which was due to the cognitive computer game, Lumosity.
Conclusion: Based on the results of the present study, informing parents, teachers, and coaches, providing practical solutions to school officials, and informing experts from the Education Organization, psychologists, and specialists about the role and importance of cognitive computer games will have a significant impact on improving cognitive abilities, including working memory, in high-functioning children.
