Introduction: Considering the role of extramarital relationships in destroying the family unit and also causing psychological and emotional harm to couples, it is important to identify the underlying factors behind the tendency towards these relationships. Accordingly the objective of the present study was the model evaluation of tendency to extramarital relationships based on object relations mediated by attachment styles in married individuals.
Methods: The research is applicative and the research method was correlational through structural equations modeling. The statistical population included married individuals (men and women) living in District 7 of Tehran in 2022, from whom 280 individuals were selected using convenience sampling. The research tools included Tendency to Extramarital Relationships Questionnaire (TERQ), Object Relations Questionnaire (ORQ) and Attachment Styles Questionnaire (ASQ). The data analysis was conducted through structural equations modeling via SPSS and Amos versions 23.
Results: The results showed that the structural model of the research fits the collected data. The results also showed that object relations have a significant effect on secure, avoidant, and ambivalent attachment styles and the tendency to extramarital relationships in married individuals (p=0.001). In addition, secure, avoidant, and ambivalent attachment styles also have a significant effect on the tendency to extramarital relationships in married individuals (p=0.001). Finally, secure, avoidant, and ambivalent attachment styles significantly mediate the relationship between object relations and the tendency to extramarital relationships in married individuals (p=0.001).
Conclusion: According to the results of the present study, it can be said that object relationships can have a significant effect on the formation of extramarital relationships, but secure, avoidant, and ambivalent attachment styles, in addition to having a significant effect on tendency to extramarital relationships, can also play a mediating role in the relationship between the variables of this study. Accordingly, developing and implementing an educational package with attachment-based training content can be effective and useful in reducing the tendency to extramarital relationships of married individuals.
